I remember the Murder Melee when Sarnac and Jo were reigning. The weather was kinda rough, and I didn't attend court (too busy helping Utsi get dinner ready), but every once in a while during court, it would rain even harder than it had been. I later learned that everytime Sarnac mentioned Aethelmarc, was when it would rain even harder... _________________ Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for thou art crunchy and taste good with ketchup

From a friend who asked not to be named:
A Legend Begins
There once was a place in the northlands
A fairytale world called ealdomere
Where many a tale have been told,
(And I will begin mine here)
Once upon a time there was a warrior
Whom came along with the title of ‘Khan’
A man that was larger than life
Of whom the people were fond
Whose laughter was always contagious
With integrity no one could bend
His heart was a large as a mountain
Someone I am honoured to call friend
With a beautiful daughter he dotes on
Who is clearly the light of his life
Even a blind man could see clearly
The love and adoration he has for his wife
His squires, how much they admire him
And the qualities he does possess
They march proudly with him to battle
As any opponent would confess
Then one cold day in December,
The Northlands became very grim
No one wanted to believe that
This great warrior’s light would go dim
Fate has changed wife to widow
A child grows quickly in years
A kingdom is stunned into silence
And will cry an ocean full of tears
But fear not, for this story isn’t over
As fairytales the hero never parts
Because through memories and our stories
He will live on forever in our hearts

From the time I first met Sarnac, I found him intriguing. We first met at one of our 'Season of the Wolf' events years back, where we got into a discussion about his military history. I was fascinated with his passion. As it was our event, I had duties to attend to yet had difficulty leaving him... by choice. I noticed that if he had an interested audience, he really 'went to town' in his story telling. Very captivating, entertaining, interesting and just bursting with energy.
Thereafter, crossing paths and swords over the next few years, his dynamism and energy was always something positive to experience. Once he got going, you just wanted to be near what he was doing. He was 'that' kind of person. He embodied an energy and enthusiasm that was infectious. As many have already said, agree or disagree with Sarnac, you knew that you were in for a passionate, provocative and thoughtful discussion.
His generosity was known far and wide, very much a citizen of the Known World.
From my perspective, he was an individual that embodied many different complimentary characteristics:
As already mentioned, he had passion! He seemed naturally excited, motivated and inspired. It was like his 'default'... his natural state.
He was talented. His natural gifts and strengths were manifested into a superb fighter, a strong SCA leader, a singer and story teller. His social intelligence I still marvel at. I have often been amazed at how he could 'work' a room or a crowd.
I think what I most respected in him was his conscience, coupled with sense of duty and commitment. His internal compass had a very visible 'true North'. The times we had opportunities to discuss some of the things that were of great concern to him or I, it seemed he was very good at being able to access that 'still, small voice from within'. The one that assures you of what is right.
In a world where far more is said than done, he was a breath of fresh air. If Count Sir Sarnac gave you his word, you knew it would be so.
He was an 'enabler'. The testimonies of this are overflowing throughout these many posts on this forum. He would often be the spark required to help others ignite their own passions and manifest their own talents. I know I was a huge beneficiary of his belief in me and am very grateful for our relationship, first as his (most annoying) squire and then as a brother within the Chivalry. My appreciation of the efforts of he and Joleicia directed towards myself and my family over the last few years runs very deep. I take very seriously our covenant to one another, to care for each other's families.
I will miss my Knight and my brother, but I will celebrate his life by keeping alive the very best of what he stood for. He was anchored in some of the deepest bedrock of humanity.

Eirik Anderson has a picture of the (in)famous Wooly Mammoth on his website at that URL. Lerthan's still looking in their archives as she thinks there's a picture of the mammoth and Sarnac in there somewhere.

A recent memory..
During Dancer's Revolt this past November, Sarnac was sitting with me at Troll when the pizzas arrived. And thru miscommuncation he got a pepperoni pizza instead of an all cheese one.
He offered me a piece of pizza and when he found out I can not eat cheese.. he sat there and peeled off the pepperoni pieces making sure there was no cheese on them for me to eat.
So there we sat chatting about life and "sharing" a pizza.

A forwarded Sarnac anecdote by THL Seonag,(forwarded with permission) of one particular morning at Murder Melee. I really did laugh at the images.
From Sandy.Benetti@ec.gc.ca
I show up at Sarnac and Joelicia's melee camp (when they were King and Queen) to see what kind of kitchen they had-it was around 11am and I was cooking dinner for them and some of their guests that night. The dinner (at Their Maj's request) was a BBQ (hamburgers with all the trimmings). They wanted a casual dinner.
[Well] people were still crawling (literally) out of their tents. Picture if you will, The
King of Ealdormere, His Lupine Majesty King Sarnac Bahadhur, crawling along the carpet and slithering (no other word describes it) into his chair. He looks up, squinting, hand sheltering his eyes. Then says "Mommy, turn off the sun...please".
Someone asks, "Is Her Majesty up?"
Sarnac: "Not yet."
The someone: "Should I wake her?"
Sarnac: "Sure if you want to experience excrutiating death".
Rustique*: "I'll go".
I ask Sarnac if that's safe to which he replies "Sure, Jo is afraid of Rusti, come to think of it...so am I"

For the first time in 3 days I have been able to read these posts with out crying. I don't really know what to say, I have not found the right words yet.
My daug, Dertie Gertie and Sarnac were very close, as he and I were. But the two of them were like two teen age girls just giggling about everything when they were together. They watched the silliest movies together and laugh about them for hours. Jo has a nick name for them ... Partners in crime. Gertie is just devistated by the loss of her 'Homefry'.
One of my favorite stories of those two:
It was a usual thursday armouring nite in Brannos's basement. The two of them were sittin on a bench just laughing & joking around, per usual. Sarnac started wiggling back and forth on the bench for some reason or another& Gertie was to close to the edge of the bench and if you know the construction of said bench you know that they were NOT meant for Sarnac to be wiggling around on. Well before we knew it the leg on the bench broke, Gertie went sliding off of it and Sarnac was right after that. He fell right on top of her, the look of shock & fear he had on his face was just priceless. Gertie all the while was laying there yelling 'OH MY GOD GET UP I CAN'T BREATH' ... He jumped up so fast ... He picked her up saying OH MY GOD OH MY GOD ARE YOU OK? She was just mortified by the whole thing. They kept blaming one another for the whole incident 'No it was because of you' No it wasn't you were doing ...' She was only 14 at the time.
The basement was FULL of people, we all stood around and just looked at the two of them then busted out in laughing.... That bench is still set off to the side and not fixed after 4 yrs.
He told her when she turned 19 that he put a special ring tone on his phone, so when she went to Canada & was out drinking he would know it was her calling asking for a ride. It was REM's 'End of the World' ... LOL ....

OH THANK YOU Catherine!!! Just the memory of that Mammoth....<ROFL>
For those who didn't know...Sarnac had this "thing" about a Wooly Mammoth lurking just over his shoulder. He'd jump up, peering around and yell "MAAAaaAAMMOTHhhHHhhh CHECK"! Well I'm nothing if not a s*it disturber, and there I was by the fire at an event during Sarnac's reign, talking to some of the best of the insurrectionists Ealdormere has to offer (in specific, Lord Robert the Blue, late of Greyfells, Seathan, and others as I recall). We started to talk about how EASY it would be to bring a Mammoth to life...a large hairy bedpad (flokati), some dryer hose...
I wasn't there to see the Arrival of Ye Mammoth, but from everything I heard, it was riotious.
THANK you for reminding me of that fond, funny memory, Catherine. Your poem touched my soul tonight, and you serve your Laurel well.

(Weds. - I just got an email from THL Lerthan, the lady of Lord Robert the Blue. She is digging through their old pictures and is pretty sure there are some Mammoth pictures in their archives. If they're digitized I'll upload them here.)

Greetings,
I did not know His Excellency well, but in the few times I met him I was struck by how well he embodied a tagline he used on the E-list: "Courtesy, Chivalry, and Honour are nothing if they are only Words."
The first event I went to was his stepping down as Khan and Roak's subsequent coronation 4 years ago. The schtick they pulled for that event convinced me to get into the SCA. At the most recent coronation (Roak again!) I saw Count Sarnac in the fighting area as I was passing through and, on a spur of the moment, I stopped, and thanked him for the wonderful schtick he and Roak had done at that earlier Coronation. He beamed in delight and thanked me, then we continued on our separate ways. I'm glad I had that chance.
I asked my Laurel, who lives in Lochac, to pass on notice of this great man's passing to those who might be interested there.
As a humble bard, I present yet more words in memory:
For Duty Calls
(In Memory of Count Sarnac Kir)
Catherine of Eoforwic (c) 2006
The trumpets sound, throughout the halls,
He does not come, for Duty calls.
Seek now him not, for he's not found,
He's gone ahead, for Duty calls.
The pipes, they cry, echo the walls,
He answers not, for Duty calls.
Hail now him not, for this is why:
He heard the Song, for Duty calls.
As strong he stood, then sudden falls,
Although he fights, for Duty calls.
We left him not, we never could,
He travelled on, for Duty calls.
He served as Khan, white mammoth bawls,
His humour served, for Duty calls.
It harmed him not, as crown passed on,
He tread the path, for Duty calls.
T'is not the end, for though voice drawls,
His mem'ry lives, for Duty calls.
Forget him not, forever, friend,
His Game is Ours, for Duty calls.
In Service and in Sadness,
Catherine of Eoforwic, Septentria, Ealdormere
Prentes to Master Crispin Sexi, Politarchopolis, Lochac

Greetings and tears from Naples, Italy.
I can't see the computer monitor for the tears in my eyes.
Sarnac was a dear friend, his passing makes my heart rip in half. I'm so sorry that I cannot travel from Drachenwald to the funeral. I'm stuck here in Naples Italy.
Sarnac mailed us a box of armor to our incipient shire of Klakavirki, ICELAND!
He was so supportive of Matt (Lord Tristan) and I as we travel the world, spreading the SCA and combat arts with the US Navy. He was so selfless and wonderful.
I wish I could be there-- in fact, we just got Heather Dale's latest CD, which made Matt and I put all our Ealdormere bardic CDs in the car...so every morning to work we both (!) sing at the top of our lungs in the car...
I'm going Home. Home. Home to the Northland.
I'm going Home to Ealdormere!
Sarnac made me feel that although you can take the girl out of Ealdormere, you can't take the Ealdormere out of the girl.
RoooooOOOOOOOOOZAKII !
I can't believe you're gone.

Sarnac was the same age as my own father when he died.
This makes me even more sad to know of his relative youth....why is it that the best are called home too young?

Thank you all again for all comments and concerns, I actually haven't been able to read the last 2 pages yet, but my helpers won't leave me alone until I post the below info. I'm still not able to return any calls as my days are full of appointments and arrangements being made.
My friends...I hold you all dear for you love and concern for Amber and I and the wonderful memmories you are posting for Sarnac. I'm not at the point to be able to return phone calls, so please all be patient. As mentioned previously, typing is easier than talking. My doctor has given me drugs to help me sleep so no more 3am nights.
Okay, we have some details.
http://www.familiesfirst.ca/runtime.php?SiteId=-1191&NavigatorId=-80678&Keywords=holley
is the website of the funneral home with details on all ceremonies and maps.
Please remember I"m asking for pictures of Sarnac to be put on a collage at the viewing and ceremony. Please sign the picture and/or make a comment as Amber and I will be taking the collage home. My sister-in-law Pam Bienhaus will be building this at the funeral home as pics are brought. We'll also have small cards for those not bringing pics. that can be attached to the collage - this is our version of a sign in/guest/memmory book.
Comments etc can also be posted there - the website will be up for a year. I may be printing favorite poems and comments for use in the ceremonies so please feel free to repost from anywhere else or if you can't attend and wish to send specific well wishes.
It's not fully complete so please check back for more info about more things happening on Friday.
For those coming from far out of town limited crash space and hotel info is avail. via Rusti/STephanie (905) 515-3514 or Tyr/JOhn (201)699-2696 _________________ On the Field is where your true character is revealed / Never Forget: http://members.cox.net/classicweb/email.htm
