I too, just heard. I'm saddened to hear this. Sarnac was a good man and the world will be a little less without him. My heart and prayers go out to his family. _________________ Shoshanna

I just wanted to add my small bit...
I am located in a small group in the North of Ontario and we hadn't had any visits by Royalty, and to be honest, never expected them.
Were we surprised (like, WOW suprised) when we had word that the then Majesties Sarnac and Joleicia were coming to out wee little event - GAH!
A day never to be forgotten, especially the picture in the hot tub.
Thank you Sarnac for your words and deeds - although not necessarily meant for me, I took them all to heart - by his word and deed he was and will be a great example and someone difficult to follow.
A good man, a good fighter, a most honest and true knight.
I wish I had known him better, even so, I'm going to miss him. _________________ "Perfer et obdura; dolor hic tibi proderit olim "

There is likely going to be a funeral in the Windsor area on Friday, and some of you will be travelling. I live in Kitchener, and can accommodate between 8 and 12 guests depending on how comfortable they wish to be. If I can serve as a halfway station for you, even if we don't know each other, then please feel free to drop me an email at gyeates [at] rogers [dot] com. Sarnac was always welcome in my home, and in his name so shall you be. We’ll help where we can. |

I'm in Windsor, and can take someone in if they need crash space. I have no pets, and I don't smoke. My email address is bluesunfish [at] yahoo [dot] com . Please, email me if I can help. That goes for you too, Jo, if you need help, let me know. Mavie has my phone number if you need it.

Life is not always measured by how many breaths we take, but by how many moments in our life take our breath away. By the little I knew of him and his life, and reading the memories of his friends and family, he certainly was a rich man.
Our prayers to his family and he will be remembered.

The first time I met Sarnac was my second event fighting. Pickups pointed out that I was not moving my hips at the same time as my arm. I felt a tap on my shoulder. A knight motioned me out of the list and demonstrated that if I held a towel behind my back and an end in each hand, I could practice feeling that movement. It was such an amazing revelation—I was actually moving my hip and arm at the same time for the first time ever. Then Sarnac stepped back and tipped over a beer, and Sarnac, Jo and I, laughing, scrambled to get paper towels from the kitchen after a lesson I will never forget.
I saw Sarnac several times after that—on the list he loved and he taught others to love, making his twisted Dooley’s and Iguana drinks, organizing the Novice tourney with Jo. We talked—about what it means to be a fighter. I learned many lessons on a wooden bench this summer—that life comes first, always. That loving every minute of being on the field is more important than winning on it. That the relationship between a man at arms and their liege is one of family—so choose wisely. Most importantly, that fighting is about being the best fighter you can possibly be, not being a knight or a king.
The last time I saw Sarnac, he was in front of his dependents, making arrangements to get me a tunic in his colours, telling Thord and Kellen and Wulfy and I how proud he was with our fighting that day. I will miss this great man with a greater heart sorely. He was a noble knight, an enthusiastic teacher and a great friend. And I see him still—in the hearts of his family, in the tears on my cheeks, in the honour of those he taught, and in the minds of us all.

Little girls whose fathers die when they are young have Heroes for life. It's a long, hard trip. But we make it.
My heart goes to his daughter. I know her road all too well.

Damn. Pardon my French, but even though I didn't know Sarnac like the rest of you, I still mourn. Damn. It's so unfair, that so many are taken from us so young. I'm still reeling from the shock of losing my former boyfriend just a few weeks ago, and now this.
I was sure that Sarnac would beat this thing. He struck me as a big bear of a fighter, someone too tough to let something like this stop him. Damn.
I met him online here at Legio, like I've met so many of you. He always said hello to me at Pennsic and it always delighted me that he knew who I was, by name, even. I admired him greatly and loved watching this fireplug of a guy fighting out there with the rest of you.
Joleceia and Amber, you do not know me, but know that my heart goes out to you at this sorrowful moment. I lost my father at a young age and it's tough, really tough, to go through life without your father, but what brings me comfort, and may this bring you comfort as well, is the knowledge that your father lives in you, Amber. You will always carry a part of him with you, for the rest of your life.
This line from my father's 1942 diary, written just before he shipped off to WWII, is another thing that brings me comfort in times of grief, and I share that with you now:
"A person is never dead so long as they are loved and remembered." Written by my father after the sudden and unexpected death of his favourite uncle, who died of a massive heart attack just before my father was to leave for his wartime service.
I weep at this moment of sorrow, but am glad to have known such a great man, if only briefly.

I remember the court at Murder Melee in the Meadow during his reign. It was my first one Murder Melee, and it was just pouring down rain. When Sarnac was speaking, every time he said "AEthelmearc" it would, without fail, pour harder. By the end, everyone was laughing and laughing. That was the funniest court I've ever been to.
These are the parts of him that will live forever because we carry them within ourselves. _________________ So Sing Vivat the Dream may it live long

| But I remember Bonfield a number of years ago. The rascals from Tor Brant had brought a training harness...it was kind of like a rock climbing harness on industrial bungee cords. They'd anchored it at one end and were challenging people to see how far they could get across the bowl. The boys would grab onto various parts of the cords and help folks along...until they got to their ultimate limit and got pulled back.
Finnvar tried (with Ferd holding a cider at the far end as incentive), Benedict tried it (and went flying across the bowl when they let go...but he bounced).... When Sarnac got in the harness we all kinda looked at each other wondering how it could turn out.
There he was, the great bear of a man, easily reaching the end where his lady and her friends were taunting him....and then when he put his head down for a final push they all got up and moved the bench another 10 feet.
When his head came up he shouted "Hey....you moved!" |

I remember that Bonfield - was one of my first SCA events. That moment is a fantastic memory.... _________________ Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for thou art crunchy and taste good with ketchup

I have heard Sarnac's names echoing off of the trees in the swamps for years. The year I left topside to camp in the swamps, he became further involved topside. His name was spoken with reverance. In a world where so many people have negative things to say behind each other's backs, I only heard good about Sarnac.
Last year, I had the honor of meeting him for the first time face to face, as I brought 10 new fighters into his novice tourney. Each of my men were thankful as they were able to participate in a tourney for them. The new guys! That this Count and Knight would place any value on their time. It was something for and about them!
With each victory, my household cheered it's fighters. Our fighters were passionate and energized. As the first portion of the tourney ended, Sarnac came over and asked who we were. I said, "We're Surtr's Brood, Sir!" Again, my household cheered! And what was already a bright day became even brighter, as an enormous smile formed on his face. He told us that our energy was refreshing and to keep it up. He turned and went back to his job.
I promise you, sir, I will.
