Well, now that we've had a week to catch our breath let us begin to work on the next crusader battle. Things we would like to know from you are:

Do you want to have another Crusader Battle at Pennsic xxxVII?
What would you like to see added or taken away?
Any suggestions you would give?
Did you like the limitation of weapons and shields?

It is understood that this year the schedualing was not the best, however please understand that we submit our battle and those in charge of schedualing put it where it would best fit with everything else. Also everything was moved around this year due to storms and such so it became a bigger hastle then it should have been.

For those on the Saracen side please recruit more people to your army if possible. Also those Varangians could get bigger. If we have more archers and a few more siege engines on either side if would give more realizm. We have a whole year to work on things so I plan on starting soon making more authentic trinkets to wear.

I was wondering what furry had gotten into those Varangians at the Castle and I have now discovered their secret...

Sir Bryce, love the pics, although a bit of an Atlantian bent...

they are awesome though! I love all the consistency in the various tunics as most are close and you can really see where various groups are working together.

Have to get some pics of various Turkish/Persian/Muslim fighting kits and set that as a goal for folks that want to portray that persona for next year.

Positives:

It was fun and cool
Lots of people took the extra effort to make themselves look great.
The weapons used were fun and added authenticity to the fight.
Dialog was fantastic.
VERY honorable fighting.
Atlantia walking up singing. (Guys I'm telling you I had chills)
All those who volunteered to marshal and waterbare.
Overall everything about this endeavor went well.
His Majesty playing Richard was perfect.
Vargas was the best Saladin.

Negatives:

HOT
Yes the wait was long but the thought was to give people time to prepare and do the grand march to the field. Also I believe it was were the good Baron Rocco could squeeze it in.
Not enough Saracens was the biggest thing I saw.
Overall I really can't pick anything out that I would say was really bad.
Well, Donas the Varangian beating me with his axe and short sword was a rather sore moment for me but I'll get him next year.

More Saracens and more Saracen armour and flare. The ones who were there looked awesome. More drunken Varangians to fight!

Well done all

Lots of great pictures at this ladies site....

My suggestion for next year is to move the day and time to a less hectic day. Yes I know that every day is hectic.... But Wednesday was just too long a day. At least we didn't get rained out!

Was very good.

I used an axe for most of the field portion, worked great but was Ivar's axe, so much heavier than I'm used to, and about 2 feet longer. Nobody seemed to have a problem with the calibration of the heavy head, but I did have problems with the head being too squishy to have ppl realize when I used it to thrust.

I think the rezes would have been ok at 2 for defenders if you had allowed those attackers hit by arrows/balista to rez.

The break worked well for those of my guys who fought in the champions, but was long for the rest of us. Looking forward to next year. Hopefully there will be more Norsemen who answer God's Holy Call.

Hey Stonesong, sorry there was no pic of your seige engine. It was very cool and I believe you all did an excellent job of utilizing it in the defense as well, give the small size of the defenders.

I also must say, the battle was an IMPRESSIVE display of axes and axemanship! I cannot think of another time, where I have seen so many of them employed in a battle at one time! For those that used them or got hit by them, I would like to hear an analysis of your usage in this battle? Did they work, not work, suck, what?

Also, lets start a list of things that went right/wrong with the setup? What could we do better next year?

Right:

Fairly quick battles
-Usage of rezes to 'even' up the sides a bit.
-Stopping the battles before people got too tired and hurt.
-Some very cool dialog between the saracens and crusaders - was everyone able to hear?
-A moment of silence for all those fighting and sacrificing for a cause.

Wrong:
-Not able to hear all the dialog
-WAY too long of a wait after the main melees were over. Imagine if the Field Battles had happened at 10 am, then there would have been a 4 hour wait!
-Not enough fighting? I marshalled, so I don't know how everyone felt.
-Scenarios could have been better???
-too many rezes for the defenders of the castle. Should have been only 1 rez.
-CA presented difficulties as everyone wanted a good vantage point to take picks from, such as up on the castle. Yes, CA brings a bit of realism and lets a few more people play, but there were only 5 CA fighters (including seige)

well, lets get a concensius.

The lady in hospitaller robes was Brother Joscelin (my wife Melisent in disguise) who though, unable to fight right now was instrumental in the plannning, teaching, and disiminating of information on the Atlantian end of things.

My favorite moment was finishing "Palastnaid" just as we approached Richard's army at the Castle and finishing up "Chevalier" in French just as we charged through the Castle gate.

Awesome.

Thank you my brothers and sisters all. You made a dream come true.

I too was awed by Sir Bryces song, and simply stood and listened. I was very grateful to be alive and to be a warrior in that moment.

Gunnar Redboar, called Maximo of Byzantium. You honour us with your prowess with the Great Ax and loyatly to the Emperor whatever treaties he makes. Your gifted Relic is safe with the Prince.
We must recipocate in kind to the others next year after the truce is up.

I sat back at the end to simply watch it all and guard the relic. It was 'creepy'. Creepy like it was a past life being relived. Black and white cloaked troops donning crosses and fanciful Saracens and Varangians in their midst honoring treaties. All very cool.

And Bryces perfect timing when he started singing In Praise of the New Knighthood.

Prepping for next war as I type

I was very honored to be a part of this battle and thank the indulgences of those crusaders and saracens for allowing us few Varangoi to come and play.

It was what all of Pennsic should be !

With Respect

Greeting my good brothers and sisters.
We of the Compagnie d'Outremer would like to thank each and every one of you who participated in this battle.
First of all to those who came out and Water bear. There was a lady clad in the black of the hospital who looked awesome.
Next to those who came to Marshal. Capt. Richard of Outremer opted to not fight and be the Marshal in Charge for the battle and over-see everything. His grace Bronnas and many others came and marshalled to make this event possible and for that we thank you.
To all those who came with camera and pen and instrument we await with such anticipation for the tales and songs and pics. Thank you for your time.

For those who fought in this event we salute you. It was so hot that day and we fought three field battles, all sort of belted and unbelted champion battles, different events and tournies and still the show was more then we could have hoped. You all really went the extra mile for this one.
On the crusader side you all looked awesome. I want to especially comment Syr Bryce and all from Atlantia. I turned and looked at their advance and chills ran up my spine.
For the Saracens you looked and fought fantastic. The effort that everyone made was so apparant. We were so impressed with the trim that had the Islam words. I forgot what they were called but it looked awesome.
Thank you to Syr Vargas for a perfect Sala al'Din. You set the example of chivalry and honor among your people as did the real Saladin.
And to His Majesty, Dag, thank you. You had a full boat being war king and I know you felt ill earlier but you came out and played Richard so well. Your kit was fantastic.

I heard that people were stopped in awe at the site of us out there. Many comments I heard how good we looked and how cool the fighting was.

Thank you all for making this dream come true. His excellency Baron Rocco put it best when he said to me, "Every once and awhile there is an event that happens that lets you feel the magic that is in the SCA and gives you that little feeling like you were actually there. What I saw today gave me that magic."

I will close for the tears are in my eyes.
Again thank you from the bottom and every piece of our hearts.

Please post all you liked and disliked about this event. Any suggestions you would have to make it better?

His Majesty Dag said He would play Richard again and if Syr Vargas would honor us mayhaps He would be Saladin once more, but with a healed arm and able to fight.
Please take this year to work on kits and recruit to your armies and let us do this again next year?

In closing I would like to say this. His Majesty honored me by saying to the group there that I did this. I would beg His pardon with all respect and love I have for His Majesty to say all I did was sneeze and start the avalanche. This would not have hapened and been so glorious if it were not for every person on that field. You made it magical and awesome.

Again Thank You.

In service and eternal respect for you all,
t

A leaked report from the Crusades to the Master of the Temple in Acre:[Alternate SCA History of the Crusades]

I, Sir Bran, known in the Lands of Jordan and Syria as Rene Deucorreaux of the Order of the Temple of Jerusalem, do pen these words through my scribe Tyerrie, from my hospital bed in Pious Keep deep in wounds from mighty foes of those lands.

August 8, 1191 Twas on their way through Outremer south of Arce, that proud King Richard and his retinue of troops and a company of Hospitallers and Templars heard of that Mighty Saladin himself was camped at a small yet heavily fortified coastal village south of Acre between the coastal sands along the Bay of Acre and the River Belus on the road to Haifa, known as al-Peh'nezet.

It so happened that as Richard's retinue approached to determine the strength of the village, a group of Varangian Guards were parleying with Saladin within the village.

Bad blood was there between the Captain of the Varangians known as Redboar also called Maximo of Byzantium and the Knights of the Frankdom. The Varangians had recently defeated a small Templar farmstead and raided the church capturing the relic there in.

As King Richard approached the gate of the village, Saladin himself shouted out from the simple rampart greetings and threats. The Templar Knight de Byram translated to Richard these words fueling the flame within Richard's heart to take this small stead.

But before he could offer a translated retort the gates burst forth and out strode the blood frenzied Redboar bearing the ax of his forefathers.
"Lo Behold Richard, King of the West. I have in my pocession a relic (*1) recently retrieved from one of the Templar Farmsteads. I challenge you to fight for its ownership if you feel its need!"
Richard's Templar guard restraining the King for it may have been a trap and the walls were lined with archers. Richard fumed yet remained calm weighing his paths.

At this time is so happened that a Prince of the Midrealm had taken the cross for sins undisclosed though many words were spoken that he was simply honor bound to his Sire of the Midrealm to help in Outremer those that may be in need of a mighty heart. His name is listed on the Temple Marshal's Scrolls as Palymar d'DeuBaronnes. DeuBaronnes had joined the Order of the Temple as a Confreres Brother and was considered as such a knight of that Order as was the situation of many of those days.

Sir Rene at this time whispered to King Richard that DeuBaronnes would be a worthy champion to fight this Varagian that would stand before us on our path to Jerusalem and the possible defeat of Saladin.
Richard called forth DeuBaronnes, dressed in white robe and cloak, the Cross of the Temple upon his shield. Through the tightly packed black cloaked Templar Serjents DeuBaronnes strode forth to meet Redboar.
Redboar called to his forefather's a mighty cry foresaking his mother's Christian faith.

His axe swung furiouosly down upon the Templar shield. Sword blows were delivered and parried. Mighty was this Redboar yet persistant was the Prince from over the seas. DeuBaronnes blade did indeed strike upon Redboar dropping the titanic warrior to his knees. Other Varangians came forth to protect Redboar but Richard yelled forth to Hold!

"Mighty is this man of the North though he fights against us." Richard turned to the ramparts to seek Saladin's gaze. Finding it he spoke, "Take this warrior and tend his wounds for he has fought like a Dragon and is of worthy Blood!"

Saladin yelled down to the Crusaders, "Take the relic the Varangian has offered as a prize then. Gracious are you in sparing his life. I hope I will show the same if you dare these walls."

Richard shouted back, "Then I give you one hour to say your prayers before we attack!"

Later that afternoon, the Crusaders formed before the gate. Though it was made of simple wood and mud bricks, it was nonetheless a sturdy wall and Richard had but naught 20 men of the Holy Orders as a personal guard and the same count of lesser Lords from local fiefs.

Richard stood in front of the gate, his leopard charged red shield in one hand and a bright hand ax in the other. Sir Rene stood over him guarding against arrow attack as Sir de Byram formed the Templars on the Right as is the tradition. On the Left, also of tradition the Bishop of Acre formed the Hospitallers. In the middle formed the local lords and thier sejents.

With a shout and a prayer they charged the gates. Beating, chopping, pushing the gates gave in and into the breach the black robed, white crossed Hospitallers charged, slaying Varangian and Saracen alike. But may fell on our side on that effort. The bodies of friend and foe choked the gate, slippery was the ground with blood of demons and saints. Then Richard called forth the Templars to charge. They attempted to break through but Saracen archers from the walls turned them back time and time again. Evil machines hurling bolts as long as lances pierced the Crusaders mounts.

After much suffering, the Hospital retreated in good order out of arrow range. The Templars shamed they could not break the gate did likewise. Both Orders suffering many wounded and humbled by the simple defense yet mighty foe.

But think not that the enemy within had faired well by any means. Their losses were great. Though only a few had died many bore bandaged of Crusader blades and wraith. Saladin, at this time, could see that he needed to break out as his generals knew not he was at al-Peh'nezet and not in Arsuf as he had told them previously.

As the Crusaders were removing themselves further back from the wall, deep sounding drums began to beat. The gates of al-Peh'nezet opened and out charged the entire guard of Saladin. Richard turned and faced the enemy. Serjent Tyerrie stood forth with the Templar Beausant rallying the Templars. The Bishop of Acre charged forth with the Hospital. Dues Volt! Deus Volt! Was heard over the field before the gate retorted by the Saracens with Allāhu Akbar! Allāhu Akbar!

They fought and swore and prayed and slew. Many were beaten down by heat and blade. The battle raged til such time a great horn sounded!
Saladin himself strode forth alone though old, still of exuding strength and wisdom.

"Richard!" he yelled. Richard came forth to meet this man of the Kurdish Deserts.

"Saladin." Richard said as he acknowledge the Saracen King.

"Many are wounded, including some of my family memebers. I see you and yours are fairing similarly but I would offer you this bastion of al Peh'nezet and coin if we could but come to terms. What say you?"

The translators talked back and forth til such time Richard and Saladin shook hands and kissed on the cheeks. Cheers went up on both sides of foes realizing deep within that they were all of very similar ideals. Song was heard on both sides.

A treaty was signed there on the field before the gates for one year of truce that included untaxed pilrgimages to Jeruslam and control of the coastal Crusader holdings. Richard, though knowing he could more than likely take the entire Outremer lands, also understood the difficulty in garrisoning such a vast land of a enemy native populace. His decision was the right one. With the coast secure and a treaty of one year, Richard knew he could return home and return with more troops at that time.
Peace was made. The dead were taking back to Acre, the wounded admitted to the Hospitallars in Montmusart in Acre. I have not heard of saladin since. I rest here in Pious Keep with the my brothers awaiting Richard's promised return in the year to come. Adieu mes amis et ma'a salama.

Signed this day Anno Societatis XLV, Pious Keep, Midrealm Commandery of the Templars.

(*1= the Relic was shown to Richard, DeuBaronnes and the Order heads. It was determined that the relic would be kept in the Templar treasury in the Middle Kingdom aka the Midrealm upon Palymars return to that land not soon after this story. The exact contents were known by but a few and remain hidden in secrecy.)

Non nobis, Domine, non nobis,
Sed nomine tuo da gloriam
