Knights Templar seek papal apology for 700 years of persecution

General News Knights Templar seek papal apology for 700 years of persecution By Paul Kelbie (click here for article)
29 November 2004

Seven hundred years after they were denounced as heretics and condemned to torture and death, the Knights Templar are calling for a public apology from the Roman Catholic Church.

The secretive organisation which was formed at the time of the Crusades has written to Pope John Paul II requesting that the Vatican officially atone for the persecution of the order.

The formal request for reconciliation to the Vatican has come from an English-based sept and is signed by the "Council of Chaplains, for and on behalf of the acting Grand Master". The letter asks for "an apology from the Vatican for the persecution of our brothers of the Knights Templar and the torture and murder of our leadership, under Pope Clement V during the 14th century AD".

The Hertfordshire-based group, one of thousands of Templar lodges around the world, is hopeful of a satisfactory outcome. "There have been some unofficial responses over the telephone and we have received certain indications from officials within the church that leaves us hopeful that an apology might be forthcoming," said a member of the order.

The Knights Templar order was formed in 1118 at the end of the First Crusade to protect Christian pilgrims en route to the Holy Land. The organisation built up vast riches from booty it pillaged while fighting in the Holy Lands. Within two centuries the order, which enjoyed the backing of the Holy See and European monarchies, had become powerful enough to defy all but the Pope. By 1307 it had fallen foul of Philip IV of France who needed funds for his war against England. With the blessing of Pope Clement V, the king moved against the Templars on Friday 13 October of that year and had them all arrested for heresy. More than 2,000 Templars were tortured and forced to confess to crimes of homosexuality and sodomy; spitting and trampling on the cross; and devil worshipping. As a result King Philip was able to seize their money and assets and by 1314 when the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Jacques de Molay, was burnt at the stake they had ceased to officially exist.

Some of the Templars fled to Scotland, where they are reputed to have helped Robert the Bruce defeat the English at Bannockburn, and under his protection many of their rituals survived. Today many groups from Freemasons to the Cult of the Solar Temple claim the Templars as ancestors and the modern order still includes numerous influential members.

Now, with the 700th anniversary of its persecution approaching, sources within the Knights Templar claim the order wants to improve relations with the Catholic Church and win some sort of acknowledgement for the suffering inflicted.

There were signs last year that the relationship between the Templars and the Vatican was improving when, in a church behind the Colosseum, a Catholic priest presided over the first Knights Templar ceremony in Rome for 522 years.

The Article seems to be factually inaccurate in a number of respects. The French king did NOT try the Templars "with the Pope's blessing"; the Pope in fact attempted to annull the proceedings: but with over 70 Templars confessing (under torure ordered by the King) to the horrible crimes of which they were accused, it became impossible to quash the effect of the French proceedings in the public mind.

The Pope opened a commission to examine the matter, and in everywhere but France (where the bishops' tribunals were in fact under the control of the King) and a couple of districts in Italy, the Templars were found innocent by the Church.

The Pope never condemned the Templars as an Order , but dissolved the Order for the peace of the Church; except for those who confessed themselves guilty, the members of the Order were permitted to join the other military Orders, or to return to the lay state with a life pension.

So Sue the French for damages...

These other groups claiming to be "Templars"are usually Masonic or Protestant charitable organizations founded long after the Templars ceased to be an institution in the Catholic Church. They are not Catholic organizations, and the Pope owes them no apology, since they have no institutional connection to the Church, and were never 'persecuted".

See a rather complete discussion of this history at :
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14493a.htm which is the old Catholic Encyclopedia.

The true Soveriegn Order of St John of Jerusalem and of Rhodes and of Malta, which received many of the Templars and their property at thr dissolution has a similar problem with the proliferation of organizations claiming their authentic heritage: the official Website of the Order may be visited at : http://www.orderofmalta.org/index.asp?idlingua=5 (English version)

Well I would have to agree he was not a strong Pope he was a relative of the Grand Master of the Order of the Templar. Some day I would love to set down and get your opinions on the subject Tigernach because I have done some research into the subject but I also realize most of the research is not from a very pro Catholic view :D

Sorry, but I have to disagree again. In "Ad Providam" Clement said the following: "A little while ago we suppressed definitively and perpetually the order of the Knights Templar of Jerusalem because of the abominable, even unspeakable, deeds of its master, brothers and other persons of the order in all parts of the world. These men were spattered with indecent errors and crimes, with depravity - they were blemished and stained...We issued a strict prohibition that nobody might henceforth enter the order or wear its habit or presume to behave as a Templar."

Again, I'm not disputing that Clement was acting under pressure from Philip. But I interpret the above as a very clear papal denunciation of the order.

Look up CHINON PARCHMENT
A document from the Secret Vatican Archives that perportedly shows that Pope Clement V secretly pardoned the Knights Templar in 1314.

A few books have been written on it and there are several discussion boards online.

Then again, which of the several Knight's Templars hold the best right to be called the Knight's Templar? Ahhh another wooden shoe in the mill wheel.

1. The Pope and Vatican are not blameless. He did not defend the Order, but passed a bill to dissolve it. He held a secret trial in which the Templars were declared innocent, but the Vatican never released fact secret and the documents. An apology from the present Vatican leadership to the present Templar leadership is the very least effort that one would expect to correct one of the greatest injustices in history.

2. There is no grievance with France. The king died soon after the Grand Master. He tried to destroy the Templars, but a few centuries later his own kin were destroyed in the Revolution. As the last member of the French monarchy was executed, legend has it that there was a cry from the crowd: "De Molay, thou art avenged."

3. The Order that has issued the request is nothing to do with any known Templar group, hence the Vatican do take it "seriously".

4. It is a matter of historical fact that the vast majority of Templars either escaped or at least survived the persecution. One cannot seriously suggest, though many learned fools do, that the Templars, one of the largest and most powerful institutions of their time, whose devoted members swore to die for the cause, just vanished into thin air, and every last member just gave up, went home and forgot about the whole thing.

I looked up the "Chinon Parchment," and can only find it discusssed on Masonic or other esoteric sites. The fullest treatment was on a site otherwise devoted to "Pyramid research." http://www.gizapyramid.com/adriano_forgione2.htm . I was looking for specific references to the text of the parchment, which I have not been able to find on-line in full. With what I did find convinced me that the parchement, as presented, does not add much to the discussion.

From the said website:

++++

"As can be inferred from the document recently found by Dr. Barbara Frale, the Pope declared that the Grand Master Jacques de Molay, together with the entire military body of the Temple, having atoned for their misdeeds in accordance with the Pope’s orders, were absolved: “(...) and since they have humbly begged forgiveness from the Church for those misdeeds, pleading absolution, we decree that they are absolved by the Church, that they are restored to communion and that they may receive the holy sacraments.” A revolutionary and unexpected conclusion. 700 years on, we can now declare that the Temple was innocent of heresy. An historically recognised fact, but one which we can now declare as a “pronounced judgment”, even including the lifting of the interdict: the Pope would never have allowed this if he was not certain that the Knights Templar were not heretics."

+++++

Actually, the text given can be read the other way. The "errors" involved the initiation ceremony. The Master testified that he in his entry to the Order was commanded to spit upon the cross and the image of Jesus, to prove his willingness to obey any order his commander might give him. The Master testified that he spit to the side, and obeyed only the form of the command, without any intent to deny Christ in his heart. (I might parenthetically observe that a number of Catholic saints have suffered martyrdom rather than agreeing to dishonor Christ and his cross in precisely this way!)

"When asked by the Commissioners why they(these acts of apparent denial) were done, given that everyone found them distasteful, the reply came that they were obligatory because they were part of the Order’s tradition. However, it was hoped that those indecent acts would be abolished, sooner or later” (from the Chinon inquiry, A.A. Arm. D 217).

It is from these misdeeds - indeed sins!- that they were absolved. According to this document, if it is to be believed, the Templars were guilty at a minimum of material heresy if not formal heresy (material heresy is false belief held by a Christian in ignorance of its inconsistancy with the true form of faith; formal heresy is false belief knowing and wilfully held in deliberate opposition to the teaching of Christ and his Church.)

If there was no fault at all, the Pope could not absolve them from it. At a minimum, the conduct complained of was scandalous and gravely irreverent. They were admitted to communion because they had been "cured" of the defect in their understanding of the Faith. Reconciliation of the stray sheep and re-establishment of communion was the first purpose of any procedure against heresy. The Pope re-admitted them to communion because he was satisfied that they were no longer heretics (whether they had been deliberately or not.) It is clear that they were not innocent, in which case absolution could not have been given. The Parchement, as quoted, does NOT find the Templars innocent.

Now, I have no difficulties in holding that the Templars were guilty of no willful heresy. They were a religious order founded for the rude work of battle, not for theological scholarship.

"The Insider" suggests, however, that Pope Clement committed an injustice against the Templars by supressing the Templars, whether or not they were guilty of the charges against them. He is entitled to his opinion.

You're right Tigernach, I had it bookmarked but can't figure out where I saw it at. There was an online display of teh actual latin text adn translation at one time and now I can't find it. Maybe it was bogus. Like the Hitler Diaries.
The only way the Templars could seek an apology is if they were actually still a group. SInce they were banished, they no longer exist. So who does one apoligize to, the Masons? I think not. I feel it is histroy and let them dogs lay.
